Jacksonville Beach Extended Family Photographer | Multi-Generational Beach Sessions

If you have been searching for a Jacksonville Beach extended family photographer who can wrangle three generations, a handful of kids, and one scene-stealing toddler all at the same time, you have come to the right place. This session with the G. family is one of those mornings that reminds me exactly why I do this work, and I cannot wait to share it with you.

Sunrise Beach Photography in Jacksonville Florida

This family chose a sunrise session and it is one of the best decisions any extended family can make when planning beach portraits. The beach was nearly empty, the light was soft and warm before it ever had a chance to get harsh, and nobody had to squint into the sun. The sky that morning turned into the most incredible blend of pastels — soft pink, lavender, and a warm orange glow along the horizon that wrapped everything in a kind of glow you simply cannot replicate at any other time of day. If your family has been on the fence about sunrise versus a later session, I hope these images make the decision a little easier.

What a Jacksonville Beach Family Reunion Session Looks Like

The G. family came to Jacksonville Beach from out of town for a family reunion and they wanted portraits that captured all three generations together in one place. That included grandparents, two adult children with their own families, and a beautiful mix of kids ranging from teenagers all the way down to a toddler who absolutely ran the show from the moment we hit the sand.

We started with the full group together, then broke off into smaller family units so everyone could get portraits with their own little crew. We did grandparents with all the grandkids, the guys together, the women and girls together, and plenty of couples time for each family as well. By the time the sun was fully up, we had worked through nearly every combination imaginable and still had time for the whole group to just play in the water while I kept shooting.

That in-between time, when nobody is posing and everyone is just living in the moment, is where my favorite frames almost always come from. The toddler kicking water toward the rest of the family while everyone circled around him laughing is one of those shots I will think about for a long time.

Multi-Generational Family Portraits Jacksonville Beach

There is a particular kind of magic that happens when you get multiple generations in the same frame. It is not just about having more people in the photo. It is about capturing something that genuinely cannot last forever, the grandparents who are still healthy and present, the cousins who are still young enough to hold hands on the beach, the parents who are right in the middle of the most beautiful and exhausting season of raising their families. These are the images that end up on walls and get passed down, and I never take that lightly when I am behind the camera.

Extended family sessions do require a little more coordination than a standard family session, but they are absolutely worth it. I always recommend a sunrise time slot for groups of this size because the cooler temperatures and the empty beach make everything run more smoothly. This is especially true when families are her eon vacation. I also work with my clients ahead of time on coordinating outfits across multiple families, which you can see beautifully executed here with the mix of soft blues, greens, white, and blush tones that all worked together without being too matchy. Everything I Capture During a Jacksonville Beach Extended Family Session

One of the questions I hear most from families planning a larger session is what exactly they will walk away with, and I love answering it because the variety is honestly one of my favorite parts of this kind of work. A session like this one with the G. family is not just a single group shot on the beach and done — it is a full collection of images that tells the complete story of your family at this exact moment in time.

We always begin with the full group together so that the most important frame of the day is captured while everyone is fresh and the little ones still have energy. For this family that meant all three generations lined up on the sand with that incredible sunrise sky behind them, and those images are the ones that will likely end up printed large and displayed in someone's home for decades.

From there we move into individual family portraits, so each family unit within the larger group gets their own dedicated time in front of the camera. That means couples portraits for the parents, individual family shots with kids, and all the combinations in between. For this session that included a tender moment between one couple on the shoreline, a nuclear family of five standing in the surf as a wave rolled in around them, and a young family of three with their toddler who had absolutely no interest in standing still and was completely perfect for it.

Grandparent and grandchild portraits are always a highlight of these sessions and something I make sure to prioritize. There is something about the way grandparents look at their grandkids that the camera catches in a way nothing else can, and those frames are often the ones that mean the most to families years later.

Of course, there are also the candids, which honestly are where the real magic lives. When I step back and let everyone just be together on the beach, that is when you get the women running through the waves laughing with their dresses soaked, the kids spinning each other around in the surf, the grandpa carrying the toddler on his shoulders, and the whole family gathered around that same toddler while he kicks water at everyone. Those are the images that make people cry when they see their gallery for the first time, and they are just as important to me as any posed portrait.

Planning Your Jacksonville Beach Family Reunion Photos

If your family is planning a beach vacation or reunion along the north Eastern Coast of Florida and you want to make it truly memorable, here are a few things to keep in mind as you start planning your session.

Booking early is essential, especially for Summer and Fall weekends when extended family groups tend to travel. Sunrise slots in particular fill up quickly because they are in high demand among families who want that beautiful soft light and a more relaxed experience on the beach. I recommend reaching out at least two to three months in advance for larger groups.

Outfit coordination across multiple families is something I love helping with during the planning process. You do not need everyone to match perfectly, but having a color palette that ties everything together makes a tremendous difference in how cohesive and intentional the final images look. Soft neutrals, coastal tones, and a single accent color tend to photograph beautifully on the beach.

I also provide a full planning guide to every family before their session that covers everything from what to wear to where to park and how to prepare the little ones for a morning on the beach.
