7 Mistakes Families Make When Planning Beach Photos in St. Augustine (And How to Avoid Them)
If you’re planning family photos during your St. Augustine vacation, there are a few things that can make a huge difference in how relaxed your session feels and how your final images turn out.
After photographing families visiting St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra, and the Northeast Florida beaches over the years, I’ve noticed many families run into the same challenges when planning beach photos during vacation. The good news is that most of them are easy to avoid with just a little preparation beforehand.
Whether you’ve been searching for a St. Augustine family photographer, wondering what to wear for beach family photos, or trying to figure out the best time for beach photos in Florida, this guide will help you plan a smoother, more relaxed experience from start to finish.
1. Waiting Until the Last Day of Vacation
This is probably the biggest mistake I see. Families often schedule photos at the very end of their trip thinking:
“We’ll already be settled in by then.” this is a huge mistake. By the end of vacation you have a laundry list of things going against you:
kids are overtired
everyone is sunburned
parents are stressed about packing
patience is lower
weather backup options disappear
I always recommend scheduling your family session toward the beginning of your St. Augustine trip whenever possible. In fact, it should be scheduled the first full day of your family trip if possible. Everyone is freshest at that point and it gives us flexibility for weather and helps everyone feel more relaxed.
2. Choosing Midday for Beach Photos
Florida beach light is harsh in the middle of the day. Not only is it super hot at that time of day, but bright overhead sun is completely unflattering light that creates harsh shadows, causes squinting and washed out skies. Let’s also not forget that Florida beaches are packed mid day creating an unflattering backdrop.
The best light for family beach photos in St. Augustine is either at sunrise or one hour prior to sunset. Sunrise sessions are especially beautiful on the East Coast beaches because the sun rises directly over the ocean. The beaches are quieter, temperatures are cooler, and the soft morning light photographs beautifully.
3. Overmatching Everyone’s Outfits
You do not need everyone in identical white shirts and khakis. In fact, overly matched outfits often feel dated in photos.
Instead, choose soft complementary tones including : light neutrals, muted blues, sage, creams and soft earthy colors.
The goal is coordination, not identical outfits.
4. Wearing Clothes That Make You Uncomfortable
This matters more than people think. If mom is constantly adjusting her dress or worried about how something fits, it shows in the photos.
The best wardrobe choices are pieces that move naturally, photograph softly, allow you to sit, walk, and hold your children comfortably and make you feel confident. Flowy fabrics and movement tend to photograph especially beautifully on the beach.
5. Assuming Young Kids Need to “Behave”
Some of the best moments happen in between the posed photos. Your toddler does not need to stand still and smile perfectly for an hour.
My sessions are gently guided and movement-based, especially for young children. We walk, play, cuddle, explore, and let kids warm up naturally.
The goal is not perfection, but rather it is connection.
6. Forgetting About Wind and Humidity
Florida beaches are beautiful, but they are not always calm. Humidity and wind can affect your hair and makeup. I always recommend hairstyles that can handle movement and simple, natural makeup that holds up in heat. This is another reason sunrise sessions work so well during warmer months.
7. Waiting Too Long to Book
This surprises a lot of vacationing families. The most popular dates to travel are also the quickest to book. Dates such as Spring Break, Thanksgiving, Christmas, long weekends and Summers tend to book weeks or even months ahead, especially for sunrise beach sessions.
If family photos are important to you during your St. Augustine vacation, it’s a good idea to reserve your date early, even before finalizing the rest of your trip plans.
Planning Family Photos During Your St. Augustine Vacation
Family photos should feel like a meaningful part of your vacation — not another stressful thing to coordinate.
The best sessions happen when families slow down, trust the process, and simply spend time together.
