What a Family Photo Session with a Toddler Really Looks Like

If you’ve ever tried to get a 15-month-old to sit still for a photo, you already know that it’s nearly impossible. I am here to tell you that this is absolutely okay.

At this age, toddlers are curious, busy, and completely uninterested in posing. They want to explore, run, touch everything, and do things their way and, honestly, that’s exactly what makes photo sessions at this stage so special.

When I photograph families with toddlers, the goal isn’t to have everyone looking at the camera. It’s to tell your story. For example, the way your child’s hand fits in yours, the scrunchy-nosed giggles, and the way you scoop them up when they take off toward the nearest puddle.

Letting Your Toddler Lead

One of the best parts about photographing a 15-month-old is that they call the shots. Instead of trying to direct every moment, I gently follow their lead. Every session is different. Sometimes we play peek-a-boo behind a tree, or run barefoot in the grass, and other times it means lots of snuggly moments with mom and dad.

The session becomes more of a playdate than a photoshoot, and that’s where the magic happens. Toddlers have such big personalities at this age, and when we let them be themselves, we get genuine smiles, laughter, and connection.

Setting Realistic Expectations

It’s completely normal for your toddler to wander off, get distracted, or need a snack break. There will be moments of chaos and moments of calm and both belong in your family story. There is no one size fits all approach to photographing little ones.

I always tell parents: you don’t need perfection; you just need presence. The most meaningful photos are often the in-between ones. It could be you playing with your child, walking hand in hand, when you’re helping them climb onto your lap, or when they’re laughing because you’re making silly faces.

Why Storytelling Sessions Work Best at This Age

Traditional, posed portraits can feel stressful for little ones. Storytelling sessions take the pressure off by focusing on connection and rhythm instead of perfect poses.

During your session, I’ll give simple prompts or gentle direction such as “let’s walk toward the light” or “hold her close while she looks out at the water.” These create movement and emotion, and they allow your child to interact naturally while I quietly document the moments that unfold. However, most of what I am capturing at this phase of life naturally unfolds.

This approach works beautifully for toddlers because it honors who they are: curious, expressive, and endlessly in motion.

Preparing for Your Session

Here are a few simple tips to make the experience smoother:

  • Keep expectations realistic. We’ll aim for genuine moments, not perfect poses.

  • Bring a few comfort items. A snack, small toy, bubbles or favorite blanket can help if your little one needs a break.

  • Dress for movement. Choose comfortable clothes that let you bend, lift, and play.

  • Trust the process. Even if it feels chaotic in the moment, I promise you the photos will tell a story that feels like you.

Final Thoughts

A family session with a 15-month-old isn’t about sitting still or smiling on command. It’s about capturing life as it really is right now: playful, unpredictable, and full of heart.

These are the fleeting, messy, beautiful moments you’ll look back on one day and smile. Because this season of wobbly steps, belly laughs, and all is worth remembering exactly as it is.
