Worried Your Toddler Won't Cooperate During Your Maternity Session? Here's Why That's Okay.

One of the first things parents tell me when they're expecting baby number two isn't about outfits or locations.

It's this: "I'd love maternity photos, but my toddler probably won't cooperate."

If that thought has crossed your mind, you're not alone In fact, I'd say it's one of the biggest reasons families hesitate to book a maternity session. Parents imagine chasing a toddler around for an hour, apologizing for every wiggle, and leaving feeling like the whole experience was stressful.

The truth is, toddlers don't have to be perfectly behaved to create beautiful photographs.Actually, some of my favorite images happen because they're simply being themselves.

Toddlers Aren't Supposed to Stand Still

If you've ever tried to convince a two year old to smile on command, you already know it rarely works and that's why I don't expect it.

Instead of trying to force children into perfect poses, I build my maternity sessions around the way little ones naturally interact with the people they love most. Sometimes that means running through the grass, other times it is simply hugging mom, and other times it means simply waiting for th moment to unfold. The Goal Isn't Perfection. It's Connection.

When parents look back at their photographs years from now, the rigid image with everyone smiling will not be th one that moves you.

It will be the one with interaction and connection. Perhaps it is an image with the toddler’s arms around mom's growing belly. It might also be a big belly laugh captured on camera. Whatever the moment is, it will become priceless because it actually happened and was not staged.

I Follow Your Child's Lead

Every child has a different personality. Whereas some may warm up right away, others need some time to open up. That is perfectly fine with me and I will meet them where they are. We will take breaks if they need them, give them time to run and let the zooms out, or allow you the time to comfort your child if it is needed. A Few Simple Things That Can Help

While toddlers will always be unpredictable (and that's okay!), there are a few things that can help your session go smoothly.

• Schedule your session around naps whenever possible.

• Bring a favorite snack and a drink for afterward.

• Choose comfortable clothing your child can move in easily.

• Avoid putting pressure on your toddler by reminding them to "smile" or "behave."

• Come ready to enjoy time together rather than hoping for perfection.

Children are incredibly perceptive. When parents are relaxed, they're much more likely to relax too.

Some of the Best Photos Aren't Planned

One of my favorite things about photographing growing families is watching children experience pregnancy in their own unique way.

Some are fascinated by mom's baby bump. some want to give kisses and some would rather run through the grass and come back for a quick cuddle.

All of those moments deserve to be remembered. They tell the story of who your child was during this exciting season before they became a big brother or big sister.

I'm watching for the way your child reaches for your hand, rests their head on your shoulder, wraps their arms around your growing belly, or bursts into laughter with your partner. Those are the moments I'm quietly capturing, and they're often the ones families treasure most.
