Why the St. Augustine Fort Is Perfect for Extended Family Photos
When you're planning an extended family photo session, choosing the right location is just as important as choosing the right photographer.
With grandparents, young children, and multiple families all coming together, you need a location that's beautiful, easy to navigate, and spacious enough for everyone to relax. While St. Augustine has no shortage of gorgeous backdrops, the Fort is one of the locations I recommend most often for larger groups.
Here's why.
Why the St. Augustine Fort Works So Well for Extended Families
Extended family sessions are different from photographing a single family. We aren't just creating one portrait. We're photographing grandparents with grandchildren, siblings, individual families, cousins, and often three or even four generations together.
The St. Augustine Fort makes all of that easy. The expansive lawns provide plenty of room for large group portraits, while the historic coquina walls, waterfront, palm trees, and surrounding architecture give us a wide variety of backdrops without ever needing to relocate. Instead of spending the session walking from place to place, we can focus on what matters most, which is your family.
Easy Access for Grandparents and Young Children
One of the biggest reasons I recommend the fort for vacationing families is accessibility. Unlike many beach locations, there isn't a long walk through deep sand while carrying chairs, diaper bags, or toddlers. Parking is nearby, the walkways are mostly flat, and grandparents can comfortably move between photo locations. For families traveling with strollers or relatives with limited mobility, that convenience makes the entire experience much more enjoyable. Everyone arrives relaxed instead of tired before the session even begins.
Beautiful Variety Without Walking Far
One of my favorite things about photographing at the Fort is how much variety we can capture in a single session.
Within just a short walk, we can photograph your family against the historic coquina walls, sweeping waterfront views, open green lawns, palm trees, classic St. Augustine architecture, the Bridge of Lions, and beautiful evening light along Matanzas Bay.
Your final gallery feels diverse without requiring everyone to drive to multiple locations or spend the evening walking long distances.
Why I Sometimes Recommend the Fort Over the Beach
One of the questions I hear most often is, "Should we do our photos at the beach or at the Fort?" The truth is, there isn't a right or wrong answer. Both are beautiful locations, and I love photographing families at each. It really comes down to what will work best for your group.
If you're traveling with grandparents, young children, or anyone who would appreciate easier walking, I often recommend the Fort. With nearby parking, paved walkways, and no sand to navigate, it's a much more comfortable option for families with multiple generations. It's also ideal if you're hoping for a variety of looks in one session. Within just a short walk, we can photograph against historic coquina walls, open green lawns, waterfront views, palm trees, and classic St. Augustine architecture.
On the other hand, if your vision includes barefoot walks along the shoreline, playful moments in the waves, and a relaxed coastal feel, the beach may be the better choice. Beach sessions have a light, airy atmosphere that's perfect for families who don't mind walking through the sand and are dreaming of that classic Florida backdrop.
During our planning conversation, I'll help you choose the location that best fits your family's needs, the ages of your children, and the overall look you're hoping to achieve. My goal is never to steer you toward one location over another—it's simply to make sure your session is enjoyable and that your photographs reflect your family's style. The Best Time of Day for Photos at the Fort
For most extended family sessions, I recommend photographing during the hour before sunset.
The light is softer, temperatures are more comfortable, and the warm glow beautifully complements the historic stone of the Fort. As the sun lowers over the bay, we can finish your session with gorgeous waterfront portraits that feel unmistakably St. Augustine.
Sunrise is also a wonderful option for families looking to avoid crowds or accommodate young children's schedules, but sunset remains my most requested time for vacation sessions.
Planning a Family Reunion in St. Augustine
If you're bringing your family together for a vacation or reunion, I always recommend scheduling your photo session early in your trip whenever possible. Florida weather can be unpredictable, and planning your session near the beginning of your vacation gives us flexibility if we need to reschedule because of rain.
Before your session, I'll help you prepare with wardrobe guidance and a list of family groupings so we can make the most of our time together. During the session, I'll guide everyone through each combination efficiently, making sure we capture the classic portraits you'll frame, as well as the candid moments that reflect your family's personalities and connection.
Let's Preserve This Time Together
Family vacations and reunions don't happen every day. Whether you're celebrating a milestone anniversary, gathering several generations together, or simply making the most of a week in St. Augustine, these moments deserve to be remembered.
If you're planning an extended family vacation in St. Augustine, I'd love to help you create photographs that include everyone—from grandparents to the youngest cousins—in a location that's both beautiful and easy for the whole family to enjoy.
