St. Augustine First Birthday Beach Sessions: Everything You Need to Know

Your baby is turning one. It's a milestone worth celebrating in the biggest, messiest, most joyful way possible and if you're imagining warm sand, sparkling water, golden light, and a very happy baby face-deep in frosting, you're already thinking about a beach cake smash session.

St. Augustine is one of the most beautiful places in Florida to do this, and outdoor beach cake smash sessions have quickly become one of my absolute favorite things to photograph. If you're considering one for your little one's first birthday, here's everything you need to know to plan it perfectly.

What Is a Beach Cake Smash Session?

A cake smash session is exactly what it sounds like — your baby gets a cake, and they get to go absolutely wild with it. The goal isn't neat and tidy. The goal is pure, uninhibited joy: curious fingers poking into frosting, big bites that end up everywhere but the mouth, and the kind of genuine baby expressions you simply cannot stage.

Take that experience and put it on a St. Augustine beach at golden hour — soft light, gentle waves, and all that gorgeous natural scenery as your backdrop and you have something truly magical.

Beach cake smash sessions typically run 45 minutes to an hour and include a mix of family portraits, individual baby portraits, and of course, the main event: the cake.

When to Book: Age and Timing

The sweet spot for a cake smash session is right around your baby's first birthday, typically anywhere from 11 to 13 months. At this age, most babies are sitting confidently, have plenty of personality, and are just mobile enough to be entertaining without being impossible to photograph.

For the time of day, beach sessions in St. Augustine are almost always best in the late afternoon, roughly one to two hours before sunset. The light is warm and golden, the temperatures are more comfortable, and the beach tends to be a little less crowded. This is especially important in the summer months when midday heat and harsh overhead sun make earlier sessions uncomfortable for everyone — especially a baby.

Summer sessions should ideally be scheduled between 6:00 and 7:30 PM to catch that perfect light while avoiding the worst of the heat.

What to Wear

Outfit choices for a cake smash session are a little different from a standard family session, because there will be frosting everywhere by the end. Here's how to approach it:

For baby: A simple, beautiful outfit for the portrait portion — a smash cake dress, a romper, a little linen set — whatever feels celebratory and fits your vision. Many families also do a second, more casual outfit for the actual cake smash portion, or simply let baby go to town in their birthday look. Both work perfectly.

For parents and siblings: Keep it cohesive and simple. Soft neutrals, linen fabrics, and a relaxed palette all photograph beautifully on the beach. Avoid busy patterns or anything too formal — the vibe is joyful and relaxed, and your outfits should match that energy.

One tip: bring a change of clothes for baby (and maybe yourself) for after the cake portion, especially if you want clean portraits on the beach to close out the session.

The Cake: What Works Best

For outdoor sessions, a simple, sturdy cake in a light color photographs best. White or cream frosting keeps the focus on your baby's expressions and the beautiful beach backdrop. Overly elaborate cakes with dark frosting or heavily colored decorations can compete visually with the natural scenery — and dark frosting tends to end up in some very funny places on a baby's face.

Smash cakes are typically smaller than a standard cake — a 4 to 6 inch round is plenty. You want enough cake for baby to really dig into, but not so much that it becomes overwhelming.

A few things to keep in mind for outdoor sessions specifically:

  • Heat affects frosting. Buttercream holds up better in the heat than whipped cream frosting, which can melt quickly in Florida's summer temperatures. Talk to your baker about the outdoor conditions.

  • Transport carefully. A cooler or insulated bag for the short drive and beach walk will help keep things intact until we're ready to shoot.

  • Simple is always better. A beautifully simple cake always photographs better than a complicated one outdoors.

What to Expect During the Session

Here's a general idea of how a beach cake smash session flows:

We'll start with family portraits and individual baby portraits while everyone is still clean and the light is at its peak. This is also when baby gets warmed up, comfortable with me, and settled into the environment.

Then comes the main event. I'll get the cake set up, step back, and let baby lead. Some babies dive straight in — others are cautious at first and need a minute to figure out what this strange object in front of them is. Both are completely normal, and both produce incredible images. I never rush the cake portion — we give baby all the time they need.

After the cake, if there's still good light, we'll grab a few final images of the family together — frosting and all. These are often some of the most joyful frames of the entire session.

Beach Locations in St. Augustine

St. Augustine offers several beautiful options for outdoor cake smash sessions. Vilano Beach tends to be quieter and less crowded, which makes it a great choice for an unhurried session. St. Augustine Beach has a classic Florida feel with easy access. Crescent Beach is another gorgeous option with beautiful scenery and typically a more relaxed atmosphere.

When you book, we'll talk through location options based on your vision and what's working best for the time of year.

A Few Final Tips

  • Feed baby before the session, but not too much. A hungry baby will go straight for the cake, which can be great — but a slightly hungry baby with some curiosity is usually the sweet spot.

  • Bring wipes, a wet bag, and a towel. The beach provides a natural rinse situation with the waves, but you'll want to be prepared for cleanup.

  • Let go of perfect. The best cake smash images are never the perfectly posed ones. They're the unexpected moments — the surprised expression on baby's face when they first taste frosting, the look they give you right before they smash their whole hand into the cake. That's what you'll want to remember.

Your baby's first birthday only happens once. A beach cake smash session in St. Augustine is one of the most joyful, beautiful ways to mark the moment — and I would love to be there to capture it.
