Mini Sessions vs. Full Sessions: Which is Right for Your Family?
If you’re planning family photos in Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra Beach, or St. Augustine, one of the first decisions you may have to make is whether to book a mini session or a full family session.
Both can result in beautiful family photographs, but the experience is different. The best choice really comes down to your family, your children’s ages and personalities, and what you’re hoping to get from your session.
Here’s what to consider before you book.
What is a Mini Session?
Mini sessions are short, seasonal family photography sessions offered on select dates throughout the year. They take place at a predetermined location with several families scheduled consecutively.
My mini sessions are typically 15 minutes and include a set number of digital images that you choose from a proofing gallery, with the option to purchase additional images or upgrade to the full gallery.
Because the sessions are short, we move quickly. I’ll guide you through a mix of family portraits and more interactive moments so we can create as much variety as possible in the time we have together.
For families who are comfortable in front of the camera and children who tend to warm up quickly, 15 minutes can be plenty of time.
When a Mini Session Is a Great Fit
A mini session may be perfect for your family if you’re looking for updated family photos without committing to a longer session.
They work especially well for families who:
• Want a quick yearly update of their family photos
• Need a few beautiful images for holiday cards and gifts
• Have children who warm up quickly
• Are comfortable with a faster-paced session
• Love one of the preset mini session locations
• Don’t need a large amount of variety or multiple groupings
Mini sessions are also a great way to work with me for the first time if you aren't quite ready for a longer family session.
When I Recommend a Full Family Session
Sometimes 15 minutes simply isn't the best fit — and that's okay.
A full family session gives us more time to let children settle in, move around the location and create a larger variety of photographs.
I often recommend a full session for families with toddlers or children who tend to need a little time before they feel comfortable with someone new. The extra time allows me to follow their lead rather than trying to fit everything into a short window.
A full session may also be the better choice if you:
• Want more variety in your final gallery
• Have very young children
• Have a child who needs additional time to warm up
• Want more flexibility when choosing your date or location
• Want individual photographs of your children in addition to family photographs
• Prefer a slower, more relaxed pace
• Are celebrating a milestone or want this year's photographs to feel like more than a quick update
There is simply more room to let the session unfold naturally.
What If My Kids Don't Like Having Their Pictures Taken?
This is probably one of the most common concerns I hear from parents.
Your children do not need to stand perfectly still, look at me and smile for the entire session. In fact, I don't expect them to.
I give families plenty of direction, but I also use movement, games and interaction to help children engage with me and with each other. Some children jump right in. Others need more time.
That's one of the biggest things to consider when choosing between a mini and a full session.
If you already know your child takes a while to warm up, becomes overwhelmed by new situations, or simply does better without feeling rushed, I would choose the longer session.
If your kids generally engage quickly and 15 minutes sounds like exactly the amount of time they'll tolerate family photos, a mini can be a fantastic option.

• More time for individual children and different family combinations
• A slower pace with room for breaks when needed
• Best for families who want a more complete collection of photographs
Neither option is inherently better. The goal is to choose the experience that's going to work best for your particular family.
Family Mini Sessions in Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra & St. Augustine
Throughout the year, I offer a limited number of family mini sessions in the Jacksonville and St. Augustine area.
Locations vary by season and may include the beach, natural Florida settings and some of my favorite locations around Ponte Vedra Beach and St. Augustine.
Fall is when I offer the largest selection, including beach and outdoor family mini sessions as well as a few special holiday options.
Because mini sessions are offered only on specific dates and time slots, availability is limited.
Which Family Photography Session Should You Book?
If you're still deciding, think less about how many minutes you need and more about how your family typically does with photos.
If your children warm up quickly, you want a handful of updated family photographs and you love one of my scheduled mini locations, choose the mini.
If you want more variety, have young children, want flexibility with your location or simply don't want to feel rushed, choose the full family session.
