Choosing a Color Palette for Your Beach Family Photos

As a St Augustine family photographer who photographs primarily at the beach, one of the most frequently asked questions I get is “what colors should we wear for our family beach photos?”

The colors you choose have a big impact on how your images feel. Soft and coastal. Warm and earthy. Light and natural. The right palette helps your photos feel cohesive and true to your family.

When you book a session with me, you receive a wardrobe guide and personalized styling support so you never have to figure this out alone. You can send photos of what you’re considering, and we fine tune everything together.

If you are starting to plan outfits for your beach family session, here are a few simple things to keep in mind.

I love a neutral color palette for beach sessions. It provides a soft look to images. The rust earth tone adds a great pop of color to the image.

Choose Colors That Flatter You

Trends change, but wearing colors that complement your skin tone and hair color will always photograph beautifully.

If you already know certain shades make you feel confident, start there. Feeling good in what you’re wearing comes through in your photos more than any trend ever could.

Soft green and chambray blue are balanced with a soft sand colored dress. These colors are muted, but give a bright pop of color to the images. Note the texture of the suit, the subtle pattern of the dress and the crochet detailing on the little girl’s dress. These details add texture and dimension to the image.

Think About Where Your Photos Will Be Displayed

If you plan to hang your images in your home, consider your decor style.

Soft neutrals, warm creams, ivories, and tans tend to blend easily into most spaces. Extremely bold or highly saturated colors can feel distracting over time.

Choosing a softer palette helps your images feel timeless and easy to live with.

Coordinated beach family photo outfits in cream and soft blue

This palette uses white to balance various shades of blue and pink. It looks amazing against the ocean and sunset sky. The soft pattern of the little girl’ s dress is the anchor piece for this wardrobe and the colors were all pulled from that dress to pull the wardrobe together.‍ ‍

Start With One Anchor Outfit

I always recommend starting with one main outfit, usually mom’s.

Once that piece is chosen, we build the rest of the family’s wardrobe around it using complementary colors, subtle patterns, and soft textures. This keeps everything cohesive without looking overly matched.

this is a well balanced wardrobe. Dad’s shirt is the anchor piece, as it has a subtle pattern. Mom’s skirt is a soft neutral tan and the chiffon layers add dimension and visual interest. Same applies to the little boy’s Hirt. It is a knit and textured material and the ivory is a soft neutral to balance out the color. Little girl’s mauve dress adds the perfect pop of color. It is all lovely with the sunset sky.

Best Color Palettes for Beach Family Photos

Most of the beaches I photograph feature light sand, soft dunes, and open ocean views. These environments pair beautifully with:

• Cream, ivory, and soft white
• Tan and warm neutrals
• Earth tones like rust and camel
• Coastal blues
• Muted greens
• Pale pinks and blush

I recommend avoiding overly saturated colors like bright red, coral, or vivid turquoise. These tones do not align well with my editing style and can cast color in strong sunlight.

Muted and warm shades photograph more naturally and create a softer final image.

Coordinated, Not Matching

Everyone does not need to wear the same color.

Instead, think in terms of a shared palette. Mix solids with subtle patterns. Combine light and dark tones. Add texture through linen, knit, gauze, or crochet fabrics.

The goal is a look that feels natural, connected, and effortless.

Warm toned beach family photo color palette

I love the warmth of this color palette. the soft pink is perfectly balanced with the cream romper. The teal romper adds the perfect pop of color along with the camel colored pants. Note that the green is a jewel tone and not an overly saturated color.

I am a big fan of earth tones. They are often overlooked as an option for beach sessions, but they are a wonderful way to add dimension and color to your images.

Choose Creams and Ivories Over Stark White

White is a classic choice for beach family photos, but softer variations like cream and ivory often photograph even better.

Pure, bright white can appear very stark in strong sunlight and can sometimes pull cool or slightly blue next to the ocean. Creams and ivories are warmer, softer on the eye, and blend more naturally with sand tones and sunset light.

These warmer whites also pair beautifully with:

• Tans and warm neutrals
• Earth tones like rust and camel
• Soft pinks and blush
• Muted greens
• Coastal blues

If you love the look of white, choosing cream or ivory is an easy way to achieve the same clean feel with a softer, more natural result.

Creams and ivories are softer on the eye than pure white and look amazing at sunset. They are paired with neutral tans here and it works beautifully. It is a timeless look.
