Is Magnolia Avenue a Good Location for Family Photos in St. Augustine?

If you are considering family photos in St. Augustine but want something other than the beach or the colorful streets of downtown, Magnolia Avenue may be a beautiful option. Its arching live oaks, Spanish moss and soft filtered light give photographs a distinctly old Florida feeling.

Although this is a stunning and iconic location, Magnolia Avenue is not the right choice for every family photo session. The setting is best suited to smaller families, older children and anyone who loves a natural, understated background. The ages of your children, the size of your group and the type of photographs you want should all be considered before choosing it.

I recently photographed a mother, her two daughters and their grandmother on Magnolia Avenue. Their session was a perfect example of why this location works so well for a small family with older children. We were able to move efficiently, keep the focus on their relationships and use the beautiful oak canopy to frame them without needing a long session or several different backgrounds.

What Do Family Photos on Magnolia Avenue Look Like?

Magnolia Avenue is located near the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park, just outside the busiest part of historic St. Augustine. Mature live oak trees stretch across the road, forming the canopy for which the street is known. Spanish moss, deep greenery and dappled sunlight create a soft Southern backdrop that immediately feels connected to St. Augustine.

The overall look is earthy, romantic and a little dramatic. It is less colorful than downtown St. Augustine and more structured than a park or beach. Because the trees create such strong lines around the people being photographed, the setting feels visually interesting even when poses and clothing are kept simple.

This location is especially lovely for families who want an old Florida atmosphere without sand, wind or a traditional beach background.

Which Families Are the Best Fit for Magnolia Avenue?

Magnolia Avenue works best for:

• Smaller immediate families

• Families with older children or teenagers

• Mothers with daughters

• Multigenerational portraits with a small group

• Families who want a short, focused session

• Anyone drawn to greenery, neutral tones and old Florida scenery

It can also work beautifully for maternity, senior and motherhood portraits. However, I would still consider it a more specialized location rather than one that fits every type of session.

When Might Another Location Be Better?

Magnolia Avenue is an active residential road, not an open park. We need to remain aware of passing cars and move out of the street when necessary. For that reason, it would not be my first recommendation for toddlers who want to run and explore, very active young children or a large extended family.

A park or beach usually gives young children more room to move naturally. Those locations also offer greater variety for a longer session. Large families need space for wide groupings and different combinations, which can be difficult to arrange safely and comfortably on Magnolia Avenue.

The location also has one very recognizable look. That simplicity is part of its beauty, but it means a Magnolia Avenue gallery will not have the same range of backgrounds as a session in historic downtown St. Augustine.

How Long Should a Magnolia Avenue Family Session Be?

A Magnolia Avenue session does not need to be an hour long. Because the setting is fairly concentrated, 20 to 30 minutes is often enough for a small family with older children.

During a shorter session, we can create a mix of full family portraits, smaller groupings and natural interaction without making the gallery feel repetitive. This recent session included several generations, but the smaller group size and the ages of the girls made it easy to work efficiently.

Families who want many different backgrounds or who need more time for young children may prefer a full session at another St. Augustine location.

What Is the Best Time for Family Photos on Magnolia Avenue?

Early morning and late afternoon generally provide the most flattering light. The tree canopy filters the sun and creates pockets of light along the road, so the exact timing matters.

Morning can be an especially good choice because the area is often quieter. Late afternoon can bring warmer light through the trees, although there may be more activity nearby depending on the day and season.

What Should a Family Wear for Magnolia Avenue Photos?

Soft, earthy colors complement this setting beautifully. Cream, camel, tan, olive, muted green, denim and warm brown all work well with the greenery and moss covered trees.

For this session, the family wore a mix of cream, green, denim and brown. The colors coordinated without matching exactly and gave each person a little individuality. Different fabrics and subtle patterns added interest while still allowing the family to stand out from the background.

Very bright colors may compete with the quiet tones of the location. If you prefer more color, dusty blue, muted teal, rust or a soft floral print can work without overwhelming the scenery.

Magnolia Avenue or Historic Downtown St. Augustine?

Both locations feel distinctly connected to St. Augustine, but they produce very different family photographs.

Historic downtown offers brick streets, colorful buildings, iron balconies and several backgrounds within a short walk. It is a good choice for families who want architectural details and plenty of variety.

Magnolia Avenue is greener, quieter and more focused. Its appeal comes from the live oak canopy and the simple beauty of one iconic setting. It is the better choice for a family that prefers nature, neutral colors and an old Florida atmosphere.

Is Magnolia Avenue Right for Your Family Photos?

Magnolia Avenue can be a beautiful location for family photos in St. Augustine when the family and the setting are a good match. I recommend it most often for smaller families with older children, short sessions and portraits that feel natural, connected and slightly more refined.
