Morning Family Photos in Historic St. Augustine: Why December Is One of My Favorite Times
There’s something really special about St. Augustine in the early morning.
Before the shops open and the crowds arrive, the historic streets feel calm and almost untouched. It’s one of my favorite times to photograph families here, especially during the holiday season when downtown St. Augustine is decorated for Christmas.
If you’re visiting St. Augustine in December or you’re local and looking for a different setting for your holiday family photos, an early morning session in the historic district gives you the best of both worlds: the charm of St. Augustine at Christmas without navigating the crowds that arrive later in the day.
Why Morning Family Photos Work So Well in St. Augustine
St. Augustine is one of the most recognizable places in Northeast Florida. The coquina walls, narrow streets, colorful buildings, wooden doors and historic architecture give us so much variety within just a few blocks.
It can also get busy, especially during the holiday season. Scheduling family photos in the morning allows us to explore the historic district before most visitors arrive. Instead of waiting for people to move out of the background or navigating crowded sidewalks, we have more freedom to walk, explore and let your kids move around.
Morning sessions also give us softer light and, depending on the time of year, cooler temperatures.
For families visiting St. Augustine on vacation, there's another benefit: you're finished early and still have the entire day ahead of you for breakfast, sightseeing or the beach.
Christmas Family Photos in Historic St. Augustine
December might be my favorite time of year for a morning session downtown.
During the holiday season, Historic St. Augustine is filled with greenery, wreaths, decorated storefronts and other Christmas details. You get a festive backdrop without your photographs feeling like they were taken on a holiday set.
While St. Augustine's holiday season brings plenty of visitors, morning is one of the best opportunities to enjoy the decorated historic district before the busiest part of the day begins.
For families who want Christmas photos but still want the images to feel natural and true to St. Augustine, it's a beautiful combination.
Historic St. Augustine Petite Sessions in December
This December, I'm offering a limited number of morning Petite Sessions in Historic St. Augustine.
These shorter sessions are designed for families who want updated photographs among the decorated streets without scheduling a full family session during an already busy month.
We'll use some of my favorite corners of the historic district to create a mix of traditional family portraits and the relaxed, candid photographs my work is known for.
Because these sessions take place in early December, I'll also offer a quick gallery turnaround so families who are hoping to use their photographs for holiday cards or gifts still have time to do so.
What a Morning Family Session Feels Like
You don't need children who are going to stand perfectly still and smile at the camera for twenty minutes.
In fact, I don't expect them to.
We walk, talk, explore and give kids opportunities to move. I'll gently guide you when needed, and we'll always make sure to get those traditional photographs where everyone is looking at the camera. But some of my favorite images usually happen in between.
Morning sessions work particularly well for younger children who are happiest earlier in the day, before a full day of sightseeing or holiday activities.
And because there is so much visual variety within a small area of Historic St. Augustine, we don't have to walk long distances to create a gallery with completely different looks.
Not Visiting at Christmas? Morning Sessions Are Beautiful Year-Round
Although December is especially fun, morning family sessions in Historic St. Augustine aren't limited to the holidays.
They're one of my favorite options throughout the year for both local families and families visiting Northeast Florida.
If you're planning a St. Augustine vacation and want photographs that actually feel like St. Augustine, the historic district is a wonderful alternative to a beach session. Your photographs become part family session and part memory of the place you visited together.
It's especially well suited for families who love historic architecture, interesting backgrounds and photographs with a little more movement and personality.
Planning Your St. Augustine Family Photos
If you're visiting from out of town, you don't need to know where to go or figure out the best time for photographs on your own.
I'll help you choose the timing and meeting location, and I'll provide guidance for what to wear so that your clothing works beautifully with the colors and textures of the historic district.
For December families, we'll also take advantage of the seasonal decorations throughout the area.
Whether you're visiting St. Augustine for the holidays, live nearby, or simply want something different from the beach this year, an early morning in the historic district is one of my favorite ways to photograph a family.
