How Far in Advance Should You Book Photos for Your St. Augustine Trip?

If you are planning a family vacation in St. Augustine, it is a good idea to reserve your photography session at least four to eight weeks before your trip. Families visiting during spring break, summer, Thanksgiving or the December holidays should consider booking two to three months ahead.

That does not mean a last minute session is impossible. Occasionally, I have an opening that works perfectly with a family’s travel schedule. However, booking early gives you more choices for your session date, location and time of day. It also allows us to reserve a backup date in case Florida weather changes our plans.

When Should You Book St. Augustine Family Photos?

For most trips, these are helpful guidelines:

Regular travel dates: Four to eight weeks ahead

If you are visiting during a typical week in the spring, summer or fall, contacting your photographer four to eight weeks before your arrival usually provides a reasonable selection of dates.

Sunset sessions tend to fill before sunrise sessions, especially on weekends. If your family strongly prefers sunset, I recommend booking closer to the eight week mark.

Spring break and summer: Six to ten weeks ahead

St. Augustine becomes especially busy during school breaks and the summer vacation season. Many families stay in St. Augustine Beach, Crescent Beach, Butler Beach or Ponte Vedra and want photographs while everyone is together.

Booking six to ten weeks ahead gives you a better chance of reserving a sunset session and coordinating around dinner reservations, beach days and other activities.

Thanksgiving and Christmas: Two to three months ahead

Holiday weeks are some of the busiest times for extended family photography. They are also when photographer availability is most limited.

If your family will be together for Thanksgiving or Christmas, reach out as soon as your accommodations and travel dates are confirmed. For a large extended family, earlier is always better because these sessions require more planning and a longer session time.

Last minute trips: Ask anyway

Even if your St. Augustine trip is only a few days away, it is still worth reaching out. A cancellation or an open weekday may make it possible to schedule your session.

Being flexible about sunrise versus sunset can also help. Sunrise sessions often have more availability and offer softer light, cooler temperatures and much quieter beaches.

Why Your Session Time Matters

The best time for an outdoor family photography session is usually shortly after sunrise or during the hour before sunset. These times provide softer, more flattering light than the middle of the day.

Your exact session time will depend on the season. Summer sunsets can be quite late, while winter sessions begin much earlier. When young children are involved, it is important to consider whether the ideal light will also work with their normal sleep and meal schedules.

If a late sunset would be difficult for your children, sunrise can be a wonderful alternative. St. Augustine beaches are peaceful in the morning, parking is easier and there are usually fewer people in the background.

Should You Reserve a Backup Date?

Yes, especially if you are visiting St. Augustine and have limited flexibility.

Florida weather can change quickly, and the forecast several days ahead is not always reliable. During the warmer months, afternoon storms may develop even when the rest of the day is sunny.

I monitor the radar closely and make weather decisions as close to the session as necessary. If you are traveling, reserving a backup date gives us another opportunity to photograph your family if the original session cannot safely take place.

When planning your trip, try not to schedule your photo session on your final night in St. Augustine. An earlier date gives us more flexibility if the weather requires a change.

Which Dates Usually Fill First?

The most requested session times are:

• Friday and Saturday evenings

• Holiday weekends

• Spring break weeks

• Thanksgiving week

• The weeks leading up to Christmas

• Summer evenings when extended families are vacationing together

Sunset sessions typically book first. If your family can schedule a weekday or sunrise session, you may have more options.

Choose Your Photographer Before Finalizing the Location

You do not need to select the exact location before contacting your photographer.

St. Augustine offers several different settings, including natural beaches, historic streets, waterfront views and locations with oak trees and greenery. The right choice depends on where you are staying, the ages of your children, accessibility needs and the overall feeling you want for your photographs.

Some beaches are more crowded or have more buildings in the background. Others require a longer walk from the parking area. An experienced local photographer can help you select a location that works well for your family and the time of year.

• The number of adults and children participating

• The ages of the children

• Where you are staying

• Whether you prefer sunrise or sunset

The best time to book is shortly after your travel plans are confirmed.

You do not need to have everyone’s outfits selected or know exactly which St. Augustine location you want. Those decisions can be made after your date is reserved. The most important step is securing a session while you still have enough flexibility to choose a date and keep a backup available.
