What to Expect at Your Jacksonville Family Session
If you have never scheduled professional family photos before, you may be wondering what the experience will actually be like. Many clients have valid questions and concerns. They often wonder if their children will cooperate, if they will feel awkward while posing, have concerns about the weather and feel confused about wardrobe. These are all completely normal questions, so I put together an article to help you learn a little bit more about me, my process, and what to expect during a photo session with me.
My Jacksonville family photo sessions are relaxed and child led, with plenty of gentle direction along the way. You do not need to arrive knowing how to pose, and your children do not need to be perfectly behaved. My job is to guide you through the entire experience while creating photographs that feel natural and true to your family.
Here is what you can expect before, during, and after your session.
We’ll Choose the Right Jacksonville Location for Your Family
Jacksonville offers so much variety for family photos. We can plan a session at the beach, beneath the oak trees, along the Intracoastal, or in one of the area’s beautiful parks.
When helping you choose a location, I consider the look you love as well as your family’s needs. The best location for a toddler who wants room to explore may be different from the best setting for a family with older children.
Some families want the soft sand, dunes, and open sky of a Northeast Florida beach session. Others prefer the greenery, oak trees, and easier walking conditions of a park. If you love a coastal setting but would rather skip the sand, an Intracoastal location can be a beautiful alternative.
You do not need to know exactly where you want to go before contacting me. I will help you compare options in Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra Beach, Nocatee, and St. Augustine so we can choose a location that works well for your family.
Your Session Time Will Be Based on the Best Light
Outdoor family sessions are typically scheduled close to sunrise or during the hour before sunset. At these times, the light is softer and more flattering than it is during the middle of the day.
Since we are photographing in the North Eastern Florida area with an abundance of beautiful beaches, many clients opt for a beach session. It is important to know that beach sessions are especially dependent on the light. Because there is very little shade, scheduling the session too early before sunset can create harsh shadows and uncomfortable squinting. Beginning closer to sunset gives us softer light, cooler temperatures, and often a much prettier sky.
Sunrise can also be a wonderful option, especially for families with young children who naturally wake up early. Jacksonville beaches are usually quieter in the morning, and the temperatures can be more comfortable during warmer months.
For park sessions, we may have a little more flexibility depending on the amount of shade available.
I’ll Help You Plan What Everyone Should Wear
Choosing outfits is often one of the most overwhelming parts of planning family photos, but you will not have to figure it out alone.
Once your session is booked, you will receive guidance to help you coordinate your family’s clothing. I can also review outfit ideas and help you decide which pieces work best together.
Not every color works equally and there are certain colors that work best in the Florida area. I usually recommend choosing coordinating colors instead of putting everyone in the same outfit. Soft neutrals, earthy colors, muted blues, warm browns, creams, dusty rose, and subtle greens photograph beautifully in many Jacksonville locations.
The goal is for everyone to look connected while still maintaining their individual style.
Comfort matters too, especially for children. If something feels itchy, stiff, or difficult to move in, that discomfort will usually show during the session. Clothing that allows children to walk, play, cuddle, and move freely is almost always the better choice.
You Don’t Need to Know How to Pose
Most of the families I photograph are not used to being in front of a professional camera. It is completely normal to feel a little unsure at the beginning. I am there to help you to get natural and relaxed photos.
I will guide you into flattering positions and give you simple prompts so you always know what to do. We will begin with a few more traditional family portraits, making sure I get those important photographs where everyone is together and looking toward the camera.
From there, I will encourage more movement and connection. You may walk together, cuddle your children, play a quick game, or simply focus on one another.
I am always paying attention to the small moments happening between the planned ones. The way your child reaches for your hand, the laughter after something goes wrong, or the expression on your face when you look at your children often becomes more meaningful than the perfectly posed photograph.
Your Children Do Not Need to Be Perfectly Behaved
One of the biggest concerns parents have before a family session is whether their children will cooperate.
Please do not worry if your child is shy, energetic, silly, or needs time to warm up. Children are not expected to stand still and smile for the entire session. In fact, I would not want them to.
I spent 15 years as a high school English teacher before becoming a full time photographer, and I have been photographing families for more than 13 years. I am comfortable adjusting to different personalities, energy levels, and family dynamics.
If your child needs a break, we take one. If a toddler wants to explore, I will often work that movement into the session. If someone is not ready for a particular photograph, we can move on and return to it later.
Parents can help most by staying calm and allowing me to take the lead. Children often respond better when the session feels playful and there is not pressure to perform.
We’ll Create a Mix of Traditional and Candid Photographs
You can expect your gallery to include a combination of gently posed portraits and more candid, lifestyle images.
I know grandparents love a photograph where everyone is looking at the camera, and I always make those images a priority. We will photograph the entire family together as well as individual children, siblings, each parent with the children, and the parents together whenever time allows.
But the candid photographs often become the ones families love most. These images show the connection between you rather than simply what everyone looked like that year.
Your children may not remember the outfit they wore or whether they smiled perfectly. They will recognize the way you held them, played with them, and looked at them.
We’ll Leave Room for Your Family to Be Themselves
Every family is different, so no two sessions should feel exactly the same.
Some children want to run directly toward the water. Others prefer to stay close to a parent. Some families are naturally affectionate, while others connect through laughter and playful teasing.
I will come into your session with a plan, but I also leave room for personalities and relationships to guide us. My approach combines gentle direction with natural interaction so your photographs feel polished without feeling forced.
You do not need to worry about creating moments for the camera. Simply stay close to your family, interact with one another, and trust that I am watching for the moments worth remembering.
Florida Weather Can Change Quickly
Weather is always an important consideration when planning outdoor family photos in Jacksonville.
A chance of rain in the forecast does not automatically mean we need to reschedule. Florida weather can change quickly, and isolated showers often disappear before the session begins. I monitor the forecast and radar closely and usually make the final decision one to two hours before the scheduled start time.
Sessions are rescheduled when conditions are unsafe or when the weather would prevent me from providing the experience and images you are expecting.
If your family is visiting Jacksonville or St. Augustine from out of town, let me know when planning your session. Whenever possible, we can reserve a rain date in advance.
What to Bring to Your Family Session
You do not need to arrive with a large bag of supplies, but a few simple items can be helpful.
Consider bringing:
Water, especially during warmer months
A small, nonmessy snack for young children
A brush or comb
Bug spray for grassy, park or Intracoastal locations
A towel and change of clothes for beach sessions
Comfortable shoes for walking to the location
Any essential item your baby or toddler may need
Try to leave distracting toys behind unless your child needs a specific comfort item. Phones, keys, sunglasses, and bulky items should also be removed from pockets before we begin.
What Happens After Your Session
After your session, I carefully review and edit your photographs in my warm, natural style.
Depending on the collection you select, you will either receive a full gallery or choose your included images from a proofing gallery. Additional photographs and full gallery upgrades may also be available.
Your final gallery will be delivered online, making it easy to download your photographs, share them with family, and order professional prints and artwork.
The Most Important Thing to Remember
Your family does not need to show up perfectly rested, perfectly coordinated, or perfectly behaved. All you need to do is come ready to spend time together and remember to let your children be themselves. Use this time as an opportunity to hold them close, laugh when things do not go according to plan, and try not to worry about what the camera is seeing.
Above all else, remember that a family photo session is not about creating the appearance of a perfect family. It is about documenting the people you love as they are right now.
If you are considering family photos in Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra Beach, Nocatee, or St. Augustine, I would love to help you plan a session that feels comfortable, personal, and true to your family.
