Tween, Teen, and Senior Portraits in Ponte Vedra and St. Augustine

There is something incredibly bittersweet about photographing this stage of life.

One minute your children are little, asking to hold your hand everywhere you go, and before you know it, they are becoming independent young adults with their own personalities, interests, friendships, and dreams for the future.

Tween, teen, and senior portrait sessions are about so much more than simply documenting what your child looks like right now. They preserve a season of life that changes incredibly quickly; one filled with growth, confidence, individuality, and so many important transitions.

As a Ponte Vedra and St. Augustine portrait photographer, I love creating relaxed, natural sessions that allow tweens, teens, and seniors to feel comfortable enough for their real personality to shine through.

Why Tween and Teen Portraits Matter

So often, families prioritize professional photographs during the younger years and then unintentionally stop documenting their children as they get older.

But these years matter deeply too.

The teenage years are filled with tremendous growth and change. Personalities become more defined. Interests and passions develop. Confidence begins to emerge in new ways.

Portrait sessions during this season become a way to preserve who your child truly is right now before everything changes again.

Years from now, these images will remind you not only of what your child looked like, but of who they were becoming.

A Relaxed Approach to Teen and Senior Photography

Many teens feel nervous before a portrait session, especially if they are not used to being in front of the camera.

One of the things I focus on most during sessions is creating an environment that feels calm and comfortable rather than overly posed or stressful.

Before becoming a full-time photographer, I spent 15 years teaching high school English. That experience taught me how important it is to build trust, help teenagers feel at ease, and create a space where they can simply be themselves.

Rather than stiff posing, I gently guide sessions in a way that allows natural expressions, movement, and personality to come through organically.

The result is imagery that feels authentic, modern, and true to this season of life.

Best Locations for Tween, Teen, and Senior Portraits in Ponte Vedra and St. Augustine

Northeast Florida offers so many beautiful locations for portrait sessions depending on the overall feel you want your images to have.

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park

This location is beautiful for seniors who want a mix of elegant gardens and coastal scenery. The oak trees, walking paths, and coquina rock shoreline create a timeless and varied backdrop for portraits.

Mickler's Landing

Perfect for beach-loving seniors and teens who want soft, natural images with a relaxed coastal feel. Sunrise sessions here are especially beautiful with pastel skies and fewer crowds.

Vilano Beach

Vilano offers a laid-back beach atmosphere with beautiful light and open shoreline. It works especially well for sessions that feel casual, warm, and connected to the Florida coast.

Historic St. Augustine

For seniors wanting something a little more editorial or fashion-inspired, downtown St. Augustine provides gorgeous architecture, texture, and charm that photographs beautifully year round.

What Should You Wear for a Teen or Senior Portrait Session?

Wardrobe plays a huge role in the overall look and feel of your session.

I typically recommend:

  • soft, neutral tones

  • subtle textures

  • clothing that feels comfortable and authentic

  • outfits that reflect your personality without feeling overly trendy

Most seniors choose a mix of casual and dressier outfits to add variety to their gallery.

I also encourage incorporating meaningful details when appropriate:

  • sports uniforms

  • musical instruments

  • college sweatshirts

  • dance attire

  • surfboards

  • hobbies or personal interests

These details help make your session feel personal and unique to you.

Sunrise vs Sunset Portrait Sessions in Florida

Lighting is especially important for outdoor portrait photography in Florida.

Sunrise sessions tend to offer:

  • softer temperatures

  • quieter beaches

  • pastel skies

  • less wind

  • fewer crowds

Sunset sessions create a warmer golden light and often work beautifully for garden or downtown locations.

Together, we can choose the location and timing that best fits the vision you have for your portraits.

Portrait Sessions for Both Boys and Girls

Teen and senior portrait sessions are not just for girls.

Some of my favorite sessions have involved photographing athletes, musicians, surfers, brothers, best friends, and seniors who initially felt hesitant about taking photos at all.

The goal is never to force overly posed images. It is simply to create photographs that feel natural, confident, and reflective of who your child truly is during this season of life.

Preserving This Fleeting Season

The older our children become, the faster time seems to move.

These sessions are about pausing for just a moment to document the quiet in-between stage where children are becoming young adults, while still very much needing us too.

And years from now, those are often the images that end up meaning the most.
