Top things to do as a family in St Augustine, Florida

Blog post updated for 2026

I moved to North Eastern Florida last year with my family. As many of you know, moving is a huge undertaking that in itself is a full time job. Between packing and unpacking, decorating the home and all of the other tasks that come in between, there is very little time for fun. However, it is so important to take a break from the grind of unpacking and get out and explore, especially if you have kids. The good news is that this area has so many things to do and see with kids. I put together a little list of activities to help make your vacation smoother.

Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens

We love going to the zoo. It is one of our favorite places to explore. The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is such a great place to visit. Adults will love exploring the grounds and the kids will too. I love any excursions that involves learning about nature, so this is a favorite for my family.

St Augustine Alligator Farm

The wildlife in this area is amazing. As every Floridian knows, alligators are a part of the environment here. So, why not head out to the farm to learn about this species? The St Augustine Alligator Farm is well worth the ticket price and gives you an educational and close up view of a wide variety of species. Plus, it is one of the oldest tourist attractions in the area. This is one of our favorite attractions in the area. My kids love it and so do we.

If you’re planning meals and exploring with your kids, why not make memories you’ll want to keep forever? I offer relaxed, connection-focused family photo sessions in St. Augustine and the surrounding beaches.

Hit The Beach

Nothing is better than an afternoon by the ocean and there is an abundance of beaches in the area from which you can choose. Jacksonville Beach, Mickler’s Beach, St Augustine Beach, and Villano Beach to name a few. Gran your swimsuit…and sunblock and go have some care free fun with your children in the sun.

St George Street

This is probably my favorite thing to do. I absolutely love the historic downtown St Augustine area. Simply walking around and looking at the architecture is entertainment in itself. You can shop there, grab a bite to eat, get a coffee or a dessert and even listen to some live music.

Amelia Island

This is such a beautiful spot in the area with a quiet and laid back vibe. The beaches are a bit more secluded, and the island offers nature walks and the chance to spot dolphins or even nesting sea turtles. This is a great option for families who want a bit of nature along with their beach time. If you have the time while there, you can have a kayak adventure or head out to Fort Clinch State Park. Don’t forget to swing by Boneyard Beach while you are there. It is a great little secret beach spot and an awesome location for family photos.

The St Augustine Lighthouse

I am a sucker for a beautiful lighthouse and the St Augustine Lighthouse is an awesome day trip for families. The grounds are well maintained and beautiful and the view from the top of the lighthouse is stunning. Plus, climbing all of these steps will surely tire out your little ones.

St John’s Town Center

As a mom to two girls, shopping is a part of my life. The St John’s Town Center is a great place to go because it is an open air outdoor mall. You can walk around the 167 stores and grab a bite to eat at one of the restaurants. A favorite store of my girls’…like every other tween girl…is Sephora and Altar’d State. We even did my daughter’s thirteenth birthday photos there. It is a beautiful place to shop.

Museum of Science and History

The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) inspires the joy of lifelong learning by bringing to life the sciences and regional history. The museum has three levels of exhibits that make science, history and innovation accessible for all. There are interactive exhibits, a planetarium. and even an animal exhibit. There is so much to do here and it all is educational.

Adventure Landing

Looking for some fun and adventure? Then head to Adventure Landing in Jacksonville. This is a fun for the whole family. There is a water park, miniature golf, go-karts, laser tag and a mega arcade.

After a morning of exploring and sightseeing, families often need a great place to eat that’s fun, easy, and welcoming for kids of all ages. Here are some local favorites that both parents and little ones tend to love:

Salt Life Food Shack

This beachside spot offers familiar favorites (think chicken tenders, burgers, fries) along with fresh local options — plus a relaxed vibe that works well after time at the beach.

Beachside Diner

A classic diner with a welcoming feel and a menu filled with comfort favorites — pancakes, omelets, grilled cheese — perfect for kids and adults alike.

Caps on the Water

Waterfront views and a casual atmosphere make this a fun place to eat with kids. Little ones will enjoy watching boats as you dine.

Asado Life

Right near the beach, Asado Life is another relaxed choice with easy ordering and flavors that fit both kid tastes and adult palettes.

Tip: If you need additional options, places like Aunt Kate’s on the River, Maple Street Biscuit Company, and 180 Vilano Grill each have menus that work well for families with kids.
