Outdoor Newborn Sessions in Jacksonville: A Beautiful Alternative to Studio Photos

When most parents think about newborn photography, they picture either a posed studio session or an in-home lifestyle session.

While I love both of those options, the lesser known option is photographing newborns outdoors whenever the weather allows.

Here in Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra, St. Augustine, and throughout Northeast Florida, our beautiful beaches, parks, gardens, and even your own backyard can create a stunning backdrop for your baby's first family photographs.

Outdoor newborn sessions have a relaxed, natural feel and are perfect for families who love being outside or simply want something a little different from a traditional newborn session.

Backyard Newborn Sessions at Home

One of my favorite options is combining an in-home newborn session with a few photographs outside your own home. You can learn why I love the home as a location here.

Many families are surprised by how little space I actually need. A small garden, a row of shrubs, a shaded porch, or a quiet corner of your yard can become the perfect setting for beautiful family photographs.

This option works especially well if:

  • your home has limited natural light

  • you're remodeling

  • you simply love the look of outdoor portraits

Adding just fifteen or twenty minutes outside creates wonderful variety in your final gallery.

Why Outdoor Newborn Sessions Work So Well in Northeast Florida

One of the many advantages of living in Northeast Florida is that we can enjoy outdoor photography nearly year-round. Families in Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra, St. Augustine, and Nocatee have access to beautiful beaches, moss-covered oak trees, peaceful parks, and lush gardens that create a timeless backdrop for newborn photos.

Unlike many parts of the country where outdoor newborn sessions are limited to a few months each year, our mild climate gives families much more flexibility. I typically schedule outdoor newborn sessions during the cooler parts of the day, either shortly after sunrise or before sunset, when the light is soft and temperatures are most comfortable for a new baby.

Not every newborn session takes place at the beach. Some families choose a favorite local park, while others prefer the comfort and convenience of their own backyard. Even a small garden, a quiet corner of your yard, or a shaded area with beautiful greenery can create a stunning setting for your family's first portraits together.

Whether we're photographing your family beneath the oak trees at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park, along the shoreline in Ponte Vedra Beach, or in the backyard where you'll watch your baby grow, the goal is always the same—to create natural, meaningful photographs that reflect this season of your family's life.

Combining Outdoor and In-Home Newborn Photos

It was a perfect May day on the day of this recent session, my client had the prettiest yard with ample shade available, so I suggested starting the session in the yard. We started with the propped portion of the session and then moved onto some family photos. Once we were done with this portion of the session, we went indoors to capture some photos in the baby’s nursery, which had beautiful light. My client wanted photos captured in the nursery and these two locations provided the perfect balance for her gallery of images with a diverse feel to them.
