How to Plan the Perfect Engagement Session | St. Augustine Proposal Photographer

When someone reaches out about planning a surprise proposal here in St. Augustine, it’s something I take seriously.

These are not just photo sessions; they’re moments that people remember for the rest of their lives, and there’s a level of trust in being invited into that. My role is to make sure everything feels natural, well thought out, and easy…so you can stay focused on what actually matters.

A Good Proposal Starts With a Simple Plan

Some clients come in knowing exactly what they want.

Others just know they want it to feel meaningful, but aren’t sure where to start.

Either way, we’ll figure it out together.

I’ll help you choose a location that fits your relationship, talk through timing and lighting, and map out a plan that feels realistic and not overly complicated. The goal is never to overproduce it… it’s to create something that feels like you.

What My Role Looks Like (Without Overcomplicating It)

I’m not just showing up and hoping for the best.

Before your session, we’ll talk through the details so you know exactly where to go, what to expect, and how everything will unfold. I’ll guide you on where to stand, how to approach, and what will feel the most natural in the moment.

On the day of your proposal, I arrive early, quietly position myself, and make sure everything is set so it all flows the way it should.

Most of the time, you’ll feel like it just… happened.

That’s the goal.

Choosing the Right Location in St. Augustine

Location matters more than most people think.

It’s not just about choosing somewhere beautiful. It needs to feel like a place you would naturally go together so nothing feels forced or suspicious.

In St. Augustine, that might look like:

  • A quiet stretch of beach at sunrise

  • An evening walk near the historic district

  • A more tucked-away coastal spot with fewer crowds

I’ll help you narrow that down based on the time of day, the season, and the kind of experience you want to create.

Why Timing Makes a Big Difference

Light and timing play a huge role in how the moment feels. For beach proposals, sunrise or just before sunset tends to work best. The light is softer, the beaches are less crowded, and everything feels a little more relaxed.

In a place like historic downtown St. Augustine, where foot traffic can pick up quickly, this can make a big difference in keeping the moment private and uninterrupted.

A Real Session (Originally Planned at Robert Moses Lighthouse)

This particular couple had originally chosen a beach location near a lighthouse that was meaningful to them.

They had known each other since middle school and started dating later on, which made the entire experience feel even more personal.

The proposal itself was simple and thoughtful.

A small setup with photos, a quiet moment by the water, and a few close friends waiting nearby to celebrate after.

After the proposal, we spent time walking the area, taking engagement photos that felt relaxed and true to them.

While this session took place near a lighthouse on Long Island, the same kind of setting can be just as meaningful here. The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum offers a similarly beautiful and iconic backdrop, with quiet coastal areas nearby that work well for proposals that feel natural and not overly staged.

What Matters Most

It’s easy to get caught up in trying to make everything perfect, but the moments people love most later on are usually the ones that felt the most real.

The way your partner reacts, the way you both settle into the moment after it happens and all of the in-between parts that you didn’t plan are what I will focus on.
