Family Photos With a New Baby and Older Siblings | Jacksonville Family Photographer
Bringing home a new baby changes everything, especially for older siblings. Because of this, some parents often tell me they're worried about scheduling family photos during this season. They're concerned the baby will cry, their toddler won't sit still, or no one will cooperate long enough for a beautiful family portrait. The truth is, family sessions with a new baby don't have to be perfectly choreographed to be meaningful. Some of my favorite photographs come from simply giving children the space to love their new sibling in their own way.
Why Older Siblings Don't Need to Sit Still the Entire Time
One of the biggest misconceptions about family photos is that every child needs to smile at the camera for an hour. Well, I’m here to tell you that they do not have to sit still and the beach is the perfect location ro active toddlers. If you let go of those expectations, you will find a session with three young children can be fun and meaningful.
During this beach session, the older sisters spent part of the evening running through the waves, exploring the shoreline, and simply enjoying being together.When it was time to slow down, they naturally gravitated back to their baby sister, wrapping her in hugs and covering her with kisses.Those moments weren't forced. Babies Set the Pace
New babies have their own schedule and I always honor that. Sometimes they're awake and curious and other times they are sleepy. Sometimes they need to eat halfway through the session. None of those moments are interruptions. They're part of your family's story and we will make time for those moments, so it cab be an easy experience for you.
During this session, their two-month-old happily drifted between sleeping peacefully and quietly taking in the sights and sounds of the beach. Rather than rushing through those moments, we embraced them.
Every Family Member Doesn't Have to Be Doing the Same Thing
One of my favorite photographs from this session isn't everyone smiling at the camera. They are th images that tell the story of this time in life and capture reality. For example, Dad gently holding the baby while Mom runs through the waves with the older girls or Dad holding the baby while mom nurses the baby. These images tell the truth about life with a new baby. Parents naturally divide and conquer and these everyday moments often become some of the most meaningful photographs because they reflect exactly what this season of life looked like.
Family Photos Are About Connection, Not Perfection
Of course we'll create beautiful family portraits where everyone is together. I know you want one or two of those formal portraits. I promise you those are not the ones you will love the most. I will leave room for the special moments and capture those. Maybe it is a a big sister holding the baby, or the new parents quickly exchanging a kiss, or dad embracing his toddler who is crying. Those are often the photographs families come back to again and again because they feel genuine.
Don't Wait for the "Perfect" Stage
Every season of parenthood comes with a reason to wait. I know it can feel hectic right now, but that is totally normal. You are adjusting to life with a new baby. You don’t need to wait until your toddler is older or everyone sleeps through the night. Each day that you wait is another day that this moment passes you by. The beauty of family photography isn't documenting perfection. It's preserving your family exactly as they are today.
