Family Photos Before College: A Session You'll Never Regret Scheduling

When most families think about professional photos, they think about newborn sessions, annual family portraits, or senior pictures. Most families think about scheduling family photos with their older teens and adult children. This is so sad to me. As a Jacksonville & St Augustine family photographer, I believe one of the most meaningful times to schedule family photos is right before a child leaves for college. This time is so special. It is your last moments together as a family before you let your child spread their wings and the perfect opportunity to capture updated family photos.

This recent family session at Johansen Park in Atlantic Beach was a beautiful reminder of just how important it is to document this season before life changes. While the focus is often on graduation and senior portraits, there is something incredibly special about taking the time to photograph the entire family before everyone heads in a new direction.

The Last Season Before Everything Changes

Senior year is filled with milestones and is a very busy time marked by change. Think about it….there are college applications, graduation celebrations, senior activities, and countless preparations for what comes next. Amidst all of that excitement, it is easy to overlook the fact that your family is about to experience a major transition.

For many families, this is the last season when everyone is living under the same roof together. Of course, your child will come home for holidays and visits and family traditions will continue, and your relationship will continue to grow. With that being said, life will never look quite the same as it does today and that is exactly why family photos before college are worth prioritizing.

More Than Senior Pictures

Senior portraits are an important part of celebrating this milestone, but they only tell part of the story. The years leading up to this moment were shaped by family and by the parents who showed up for every practice, recital, game, school event, and milestone. they are also shaped by the siblings who grew up side by side. These relationships helped shape the person your child has become. That is why I encourage the Jacksonville and St Augustine families to think beyond traditional senior portraits and make time for a family session as well. Years from now, these photographs will tell a much bigger story than a cap-and-gown portrait ever could.

The Photos You'll Treasure Most

Every family wants a few traditional portraits and yes, we always make time for those. We all know that is the one that Grandma will proudly display on her mantel, but during every session, there are also moments that happen naturally. Those are often the images families return to again and again because they capture what this season of life actually felt like.

Why Senior Year Is the Perfect Time for Family Photos

One of the biggest misconceptions about family photography is that there has to be a major event to justify scheduling a session.

The truth is that this season is the occasion. If your child is preparing to leave for college, move away, or begin the next chapter of life, there is no better time to document your family exactly as it is today. Many families tell me afterward that they are grateful they did not wait. Because once move-in day arrives, schedules become busier, visits become less frequent, and everyone settles into new routines. Taking family photos before college gives you the opportunity to pause and preserve this chapter before it becomes a memory.

Choosing a Location for Family Photos Before College

Many of my Jacksonville and St. Augustine family photography clients choose locations that feel relaxed and meaningful. For this session, Johansen Park was the perfect setting. The beautiful oak trees, natural scenery, and peaceful atmosphere created a timeless backdrop that kept the focus exactly where it belonged and that was on the family and their connection to one another.

Whether you choose a favorite beach, a local park, or a place that holds special memories, the location is far less important than making the time to be together. Learn more about how to choose a location here.

A Gift Your Future Self Will Thank You For

I have learned that the photographs families value most are often the ones they almost did not take. I know that life gets busy and how there is always another deadline, another activity, or another reason to wait until next year. However, if you have a child preparing to leave for college, I encourage you not to wait. The weeks and months before this transition are filled with emotion, anticipation, and connection and they deserve to be remembered. Because years from now, when your child has graduated from college and started a life of their own, these photographs will remind you of exactly who your family was during this fleeting season. I promise you; this is a session you'll never regret scheduling.
