What If We're Awkward in Front of the Camera? Posing Tips for Real Families

Most families walk into a photo session with the same worry: What if we look awkward? What if the kids won’t cooperate? What if we have no idea what to do?

If that sounds familiar, you are absolutely not alone.

I’ve never met a family who wasn’t at least a little uncomfortable at the beginning of their session. I’ve also never met a client who couldn’t settle into something real once they relaxed a bit. That’s not just something I say to make people feel better. It’s something I’ve seen over and over again as a family photographer here in the Ponte Vedra Beach area.

Feeling Stiff at the Beginning Is Completely Normal

There’s something about having a camera pointed at you that instantly makes people feel like they should already know what to do. So everyone gets a little tense. Smiles feel forced. Hands suddenly feel awkward. Parents start worrying about whether the kids are behaving “well enough.”

Honestly, it makes perfect sense.

Most people are not used to being photographed professionally, especially in a way that’s supposed to feel natural and connected. A lot of the awkwardness has nothing to do with the family itself. It comes from the pressure people put on themselves to somehow perform perfectly in front of the camera.

My job is to take that pressure away.

I’m not going to stand there expecting you to magically know how to pose or interact. I guide you through the entire session in a way that feels relaxed and natural. We will talk, move around, joke and all the while, I give gentle direction the whole time without making it feel overly posed or rigid.

I have found that once families become comfortable with me and my approach, they tend to stop worrying about “doing it right,” that’s when the real moments begin to unfold.

What People Think They Want Versus What Actually Works

Here's something I say to families a lot: everyone says they want candid photos, but those types of photos actually need is a little direction first.

Candid doesn't mean the photographer disappears and hopes for the best. Real, natural-looking images come from guided movement and interaction. I'm giving direction the whole time, but I'm just doing it in a way that doesn't feel like a photo shoot.

I'll tell you how to turn, where to put your hands, where to stand in relation to each other and while you're focused on following along, you stop thinking about the camera. You start thinking about your family. The connection happens through the action, and I'm capturing it as it unfolds.

This is how posing actually works for real families - not stiff, hold-that-smile setups, but gentle direction that creates the conditions for something honest to surface.

  • I use movement and prompts to get families interacting naturally

  • Direction is built into the flow, not announced like a command

  • Hand placement, body position, and spacing are all guided - you don't have to figure any of it out yourself

  • The more you focus on each other, the less you're thinking about the lens

What I Actually Want You to Do During Your Session

When families ask me what they should focus on, my answer is always the same: just focus on each other.

Treat the session as an opportunity to love on your family and block out everything else. I want it to feel like a bonding experience - because that's genuinely what I think a photo session should be. Not a performance, not a checklist, not something to get through. A moment to actually be together, with someone there to hold onto it for you.

When you come in with that mindset, the images take care of themselves. I handle the technical side. I handle the guiding. All you have to do is show up and be present with the people you love.

And if your kids are running in circles or your toddler is melting down or you feel like nothing is going according to plan - that's okay. That's actually fine. I've been there, and I know how to work with it. Some of the most meaningful images I've made came from exactly those moments.

Why This Matters More Than You Might Realize

The families who tell me they're worried about being awkward are often the same ones who send me a message after their gallery saying they didn't realize it could feel that easy.

Because here's what I know: the awkwardness at the start isn't a sign that you're bad at this. It's a sign that you care. You want the images to mean something. You want to show up for your family. That intention is already doing most of the work.

My role is just to create the space where your real family - the one that exists when no one's watching - can actually show up in front of the camera. That's what 32081 lifestyle family photography looks like at its best: not perfection, but presence.

The images that stay with you aren't the ones where everyone held perfectly still. They're the ones where something true happened. And that's always been the goal.

Ready to Feel More Like Yourself in Front of the Camera?

If you've been putting off booking a session because you're not sure your family can pull it off - I'd gently say: this is exactly the kind of session I'm here for.

You don't need to have it together. You don't need perfectly behaved kids or a partner who loves having their photo taken. You just need to show up. I'll handle the rest.

If you're looking for a family photographer inSt Augustine who will guide you through the whole thing - calmly, without pressure, and with a lot of genuine care for how you actually feel during it - I'd love to connect.

Reach out and let's talk about what your session could look like. I think you might be surprised by how much easier it is than you're expecting.
