Surprise Proposal on the Water | North Eastern Florida Engagement Photographer
We are approaching one of the most beautiful times of year here in St. Augustine, and it also happens to be one of the most popular seasons for proposals.
I truly love photographing surprise proposals. No matter how many I am a part of, each one feels incredibly personal and meaningful. These moments are once-in-a-lifetime, and it is always an honor to help plan and document them.
Planning a Proposal That Feels Natural and Thoughtful
Whether you’re visiting St. Augustine, staying in Ponte Vedra, or local to Jacksonville, I am here to guide you through the entire proposal experience. Every proposal I photograph begins with a conversation and a short questionnaire. This helps me understand the couple, what feels natural to them, and what kind of setting will make the moment feel both genuine and seamless.
From there, I guide my clients toward locations that are not only beautiful, but also practical; places that won’t raise suspicion and allow the moment to unfold naturally.
Choosing the Right Location in Northeast Florida
For this proposal, we chose a quiet, scenic location in St. Augustine that felt true to them and offered just the right balance of privacy and atmosphere.
One of the things I love most about this area is the variety. You can have a proposal that feels coastal and open along the beaches of Ponte Vedra, something historic and intimate in downtown St. Augustine, or even a quieter, tucked-away setting surrounded by nature.
This particular location had a natural, relaxed feel to it; the kind of place where stopping for a walk wouldn’t feel out of the ordinary.
A Plan that is True to You as a COuple
My client told his girlfriend they were heading out to explore St. Augustine for the day. Along the way, they made a stop at this waterfront location, which fit naturally into their plans and didn’t raise any suspicion. Because the couple often goes on hikes together, this plan was seamless and natural for them. You can learn more about how to create a plan and still keep it a secret here.
Romantic Portraits after the Proposal
Afterwards, we spent some time capturing engagement photos while everything still felt fresh and emotional.
I especially love this part of the session because nothing is forced. The excitement is real, the connection is natural, and the images reflect exactly how the moment felt.
Why Timing Matters
The light here in Florida can be incredibly beautiful, especially in the early morning or just before sunset, and it added so much depth and warmth to their gallery.
When they first arrived, the couple took in the scenery, strolled the beach and sat on some large boulders away from the very few visitors who were at the beach that day. Once my client got down on one knee to pop the big question, I began shooting though my zoom lens and swiftly made my way towards them.
A Romantic Backdrop for images
Afterwards, I took some engagement photos using the bright blue waters as a backdrop and the gorgeous natural shoreline. They were such a fun loving and sweet couple and I was able to capture so many gorgeous images of them at this magnificent location. We also incorporated a small champagne toast, which is always one of my favorite additions. It brings in a sense of celebration and gives couples a moment to slow down and really take it all in.
a Once in a lifetime Experience
There was so much laughter during this session, and it was clear how much they enjoy simply being together.
After their session, they headed into downtown St. Augustine to continue celebrating; which is one of the things I always recommend. Whether it’s a dinner reservation, a walk through the historic streets, or time at the beach, it helps turn the proposal into a full experience.
