Glamping with the Geraghtys | Saying Goodbye to the Playmor and Hello to the Avion

We purchased a 1969 Playmor canned ham style camper back in 2018. When we found her, we knew we had uncovered a true gem. We spent a little over a year renovating her and it was worth the work because we enjoyed many trips in our little beauty.  You can see what she looked like when we first purchased her in this post and the renovation process here and in this last post.

While on camping trips, I am always amazed by the amount of compliments we get from fellow campers. In the age of modern technology, most of the RV’s you see on a campground are modern and massive. Although our camper is tiny, she still attracts a lot of attention.

Although we love our camper tremendously, it was with a very heavy heart that we decided to sell our beautiful Playmor camper. We recently purchased a larger vintage camper and are about to start a new chapter in our life with her. If I had a backyard, I would hold on to our Playmor and use it as my office space ; but, sadly, this is not the case and she now has a home with another family who will cherish her. I know they will have many new adventures in the camper and that warms my heart.

It was always our goal to transition to a larger vintage style camper and we finally found exactly what we were looking for, which is a 1968 Avion camper. This trailer is very similar in structure and style to the Airstream and we are beyond excited to start the renovations on this bad boy. This camper has excellent bones; in fact, we can start using the trailer right now. We plan to take it on an inaugural journey once we clean the interior and purchase some new mattresses. I love how open this camper feels and how comfortably we all fit in it. I can even have guests in the camper and it still does not feel cramped. One of my favorite things about the Avion is the fact that there is tons of storage! I no longer have to use the truck of my car to store all of my items.

We are getting a game plan together for how we will update her and make the Avion perfect for our family. After we use it once or twice, I think we will get a sense of what needs to be done. As of right now, we will be adding bunk beds to open up the back area of the camper. We plan on gutting and renovating the bathroom to make it more spacious and modern. We will rip up the floors and put new wood flooring down. We will also paint the interior of the camper a bright white color and add shiplap as an accent. The kitchen will be renovated and reconfigured so that we can build a dinette booth that drops to a bed, which would give us the ability to sleep five total. We are having some difficulty figuring out what to do at the front of the trailer. We are not certain if we will keep the existing couch that turns into a bed and reupholster it or build a larger custom made sofa bed. We also can’t decide if we want to shine up the metal exterior or paint her. We plan on taking some time before we make any major renovations. Our goal is to keep as much of the original camper in tact, while also making use of every inch of space.

Here are some updated pics of the Playmor camper and a few of our newest project.
