June Sunsets | A Beach Family Session

Is it me, or did this academic year fly by? It is so hard to believe that the end of June is nearly here, which is also the end of the 2020-2021 school year for our children. What a wild ride the last ten months have been. It started in such a state of uncertainty and now things finally feel like they are back to normal.

June is such a great month; not only because the children are done with school, but because it is the kick off for my season of family photos on the beach at sunset. These are my most popular sessions and I understand why my clients love this location. The colors are beautiful, it allows for an uncluttered natural backdrop and there is something about being at the beach that inspires love and laughter. June is a great month to schedule a session with your children because the weather is warm, but not too hot, and the beaches are usually not as crowded.

I photographed this family last year for their Fall photo session and I was so excited to have the opportunity to get to work with them again. We had the absolute perfect night for a sunset beach session. There was a slight warm breeze, there was absolutely no humidity, the ocean was warm and the sky changed from deep hues of blue to pale pastels of pink, purple and orange.

This family has three children ranging from 5 to 15 months. When I photograph families with children this young, I try to get all of the “must have” posed images out of the way first and I try to work fast. Typically, this is when the children are most receptive to being “posed.” This doesn’t mean that I stop posing you once we have those photos. Throughout the session, I am directing you and incorporating movement. I do so because most children do not like to sit still for a camera. Plus, I want the children playing and interacting with you and each other so I can capture magical moments for you.

We started this session with some photos over by the dunes. I wanted to add some dimension and color to this family’s collection of images and the dunes was the perfect spot to do so. We then made our way over towards the jetty, during which time we played a game or two and captured some whimsical images of the children playing in the gorgeous light of the setting sun. Once we got to the jetty, mom opted to change the girls into matching dresses and we captured some sweet mother daughter images and images of dad with the kids.

I like to end beach sessions at the shoreline. This when it is time to unwind and have some fun in the ocean. The children love this part of the session and the images captured in the waves are often my favorite from the evening. The photos are so care free and playful and the light reflecting off of the ocean is breathtaking. Although this part of the session is a blast, it can get messy; so, it is always a good idea to pack a change of clothes and some towels for the whole family. This mom was prepared and the kids were able to change into some dry clothes, so that they could enjoy an evening at Marvel after their fun filled night.

Sometimes moms leave the session and tell me they are worried that I wasn’t able to capture anything, but that is never the case. Even though we are moving fast and incorporating activity, I promise you, I am documenting with a purpose. For example, even with three very young children, I was able to capture a good balance of emotive and traditional images during this session. I just love their collection of images.

Beach sessions can only be scheduled at sunset or sunrise and for each session, I build in a rain date so that I am able to reschedule due to inclement weather. For this reason my spots book up very quickly. If you missed out on a spot for the 2021 season, you can subscribe to the newsletter. I open booking to my subscribers in February. If you would like more information about a session or would like to book a session, contact me.
