A First Birthday and Family Session at Sunset

One of the greatest aspects of my job is having the opportunity to watch my clients’ families grow. I first photographed this family four years ago when their first daughter was born. Since that time, I have seen them for milestones, holiday photos, and their second child’s newborn session. I was so excited to work with them again for their daughter’s first birthday session on the beach. They usually do studio sessions, so the fact that we were doing an outdoor family session on the beach was exciting.

This family is so sweet. The eldest daughter is an absolute love and has the sweetest personality. The birthday girl is also a delight and possibly the most gorgeous baby I have ever seen.

We started the session with family photos in the dunes of the beach. Big sister was eager to sit on the jetty, so as soon as we finished up with those photos, we moved over to the jetty and captured a few images with the gorgeous pink sky in the background. I always make sure to capture images of the family in the water, but we moved through this quickly so we had enough time for the cake smash.

I absolutely love the color combination mom chose for this part of the session. She dressed the birthday girl in a pale aqua gauze onesie with a bright pink iced cake. The color combo with the sky is magical. I just love cake smash photos. Even though they are super messy, it is worth it because the photos really capture the milestone of a first birthday. When you combine a cake smash with a sunset sky, it is perfection.
