A Gorgeous In Home Newborn Session | Newborn Sessions in the Safety and Comfort of Your Own Home

I have always taken the safety of my clients very seriously, but now due to the recent findings of COVID-19, I have heightened my safety measures. I am a mom of two, so I know how nerve wracking it is to be a new parent. I always want my clients to feel comfortable, confident and, most importantly, safe during a session with me, so I have instituted new safety guidelines for my business. To see the new safety measures I am taking, you can click here to view my post on those guidelines.

I have always loved lifestyle newborn sessions. In my opinion, they are the most authentic and natural way to capture those first moments with baby. Although I am still scheduling newborn sessions at my studio, I am happy to be able to offer all of my clients the option to capture newborn photos in the safe and controlled environment of their own home. I know that this can bring peace of mind to the many new parents who still wish to have newborn photos taken. An additional source of comfort for parents is the fact that a lifestyle session is mostly focused on capturing family interaction and connection; therefore, this session involves the least amount of contact between myself and the baby. For example, during this particular session, I did not handle the baby at all. Now, complete disclosure here…I did have an awesome assistant in the dad, who just might be the best swaddler I have ever met. Furthermore, although I come to each session with my own props, blankets, and outfits, clients are welcome to use their own if they are more comfortable with that option. I can provide a list of trusted vendors who supply quality prodcuts suitable for a newborn session.

I love that every in home session is truly unique. Each home has a distinct style and this backdrop serves as a unique and intimate backdrop for these sessions. I recently photographed a family in their beautiful, bright and airy home. It was a pleasure to work with them, their adorable fur baby, and of course, their beautiful newborn daughter. This session was scheduled when Miss T was three weeks old, which is another positive to scheduling a lifestyle session; you can wait until week three or even four to schedule the session.

The flow of a lifestyle session is completely contingent on the baby. I always include at least one posed formal set up during the session. This portion of the session is the only time during which baby must be asleep. I often take these photos at the start of the session, if she is asleep, or later in the session, after we take family portraits. There is less down time during an in home session because the baby can be awake and alert for all of the family photos; in fact, I prefer baby to be awake for most images because it typically facilitates better connected images.

For this particular session, Miss T was asleep upon my arrival, so we started with the posed images. I never overly prop my sets and prefer to capture natural and simple images. I incorporated some florals and a flokati blanket to add texture. I just love the images. and the color combination.

Afterwards, we went through a series of family photos during which time, the family’s dog, an adorable Western Terrier, stole the show. He was so sweet and protective of his baby sister and followed her everywhere making sure that she was OK. I am a dog owner and lover, so I love that this type of session allows me to capture pets with their growing and evolving family. Pets are an integral part of a family and deserve to be a part of newborn photos.

Miss T was a pleasure throughout the session and slept through most of it. I was lucky to capture a few wide eyed images that are amongst my favorite from the gallery. Here are a few of my favorites from their session.
