Summer is approaching and so is my busy season of family photography. I know that for most moms, planning the wardrobe for a family session can seem like a daunting process; however I am here to alleviate some of that stress and make the process a simple one for my clients. I decided to put together an updated blog post with some tips on planning your wardrobe for your Summer photo session.
I find that dressing myself for events is always tough. I want to look chic and polished, but I also know that I need to be comfortable enough to be able to chase after my young children. For this reason, I always suggest starting with mom’s outfit first. Garments made of soft and feminine materials such as chiffon, lace and gauze are great options. I personally prefer maxi or midi dresses because they are lightweight and comfortable. Additionally, longer length dresses allow you to remain covered for all of the photos that I will capture of you seated on the ground with your little ones. If you are not into maxi dresses, classic white jeans and a flowing top is another great option. Some great websites for moms are: Free People, Joyfolie, Anthropologie, Nordstrom Rack, Vici, and Forever 21. If you want to go to a brick and mortar store, TJ Maxi and Marshalls are also great.
Once moms, find an outfit in which she feels most comfortable and confident, the next step is to choose outfits for the rest of the family in a complimentary palette. When choosing a color palette, you should choose one that represents the style fo your home, but also is appropriate for the location. For example, I tend to favor eclectic patterns and bright and bold colors for my home, but for beach sessions, I would choose a palette that is soft and muted.
Choosing the clothes for children would be the next step. I don’t recommend matching siblings exactly, but coordinating them instead. Lightweight dresses, jumpsuits or even overalls layered with a gauze top are great options for girls. For boys, shorts and a button down top is perfect. Jeans with a t- shirt and suspenders is another great choice. It is really important that you choose outfits for children in which they feel comfortable. If your child is not conformable, it will show in the photos. For example, if your daughter doesn't like dresses, choose a cute jumpsuit or overalls with a dressier peasant shirt beneath it. If she doesn't like to wear hair bows, don’t force it. For boys who don’t like jeans, try denim chambray drawstring shorts from sites like Gap and Old Navy and a soft and lightweight white polo shirt. He will still look neat, but will also be comfy. Some great sites for children's clothing: Zulily, Target, Matilda Jane, Hanna Anderson, Joyfolie, Doll Cake Vintage, H&M, Nordstrom Rack, and The Children's Place.
I find that dads are the easiest to dress and I typically recommend button down shirts classic with jeans for beach sessions. Khaki shorts and a polo is another great choice or even brightly colored pants with a polo. Just like the kids, we want dads to be happy during the session, so make sure dad is wearing something that is his style and in which he feels comfortable. Most of the time, you will be able to use something from his closet to wear for the session. I really love Old Navy and Gap for dads. Target and American Eagle also have some great options.
To help with wardrobe, I compile Pinterest boards with updated wardrobe options for all of my clients. I am always available to help them choose outfits and coordinate. In the past, clients have sent me text messages from dressing rooms asking for opinions and I have sifted through hundreds of photos sent to me by clients to help them coordinate the family. I love fashion and I love the styling side of my job, so I always welcome these questions.
